Practical Technologist in Radiology

Practical Technologist in Radiology

Associate of Science Degree

Objective

The Practical Technologist in Radiology plays an important role as a member of the Health Care team in a Physician's office or clinic. Theory and practical application in the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology are taught as well as an introduction to specific disease processes and trauma, which affect the various body systems, with emphasis placed on the respiratory and skeletal systems. Students are certified to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). In addition, students engage in "hands-on" training in the X-ray lab with regard to positioning of the chest, hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, shoulder girdle, knee, foot and ankle. Students are also taught to perform veni-puncture, injections, urinalysis, electrocardiography, and X-ray film processing. Students study theory and concepts of radiographic physics and are taught patient care procedures as well as basic office administrative procedures. This program equips the graduate with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the varied and expanding requirements of an entry-level Practical Technologist in Radiology (Limited Scope).

This program provides the background that enables a student to assume a responsible entry-level position as a Practical Technologist in Radiology. Upon successful completion of this program of study, the graduate is eligible to take the Arizona State Examination for the Practical Technologist in Radiology. Once the graduate passes the examination, he may assume a responsible position as a member of the team in a Physician's office or clinic. In addition to being qualified to provide X-ray services, the graduate is also qualified to act as a technical assistant by being qualified to perform electrocardiograms, veni-puncture, routine laboratory tests, injections, and related back-office patient care procedures. It is recommended that the prospective student verify certification requirements of another state if he is considering relocation outside of Arizona.

The Associate of Science Degree Program provides the foundation for a graduate to find expanded long term career opportunities and emphasizes communication skills that will give the graduates a competitive edge. The knowledge gained in this program, combined with work experience, may provide future entry-level opportunities in managing an office. Graduates of the Associate of Science and Diploma Programs may secure such specific positions as a Practical Technologist in Radiology (Limited Scope) or Back Office Assistant.

Each course stands alone as a unit of study and is not dependent upon prerequisite training. A student may enter the program at the beginning of any course and continue through the sequence until completion of all courses.
